Where,
amidst
dust,
scraps
and fish-market style
haggling
and bargaining,
our gods
are sold on street corners;

where babies
are taken from their
mother’s laps,
kicking,
screaming,
bawling
and wailing,
to sob with
other toddlers
while being
taught
to
play;

where children
are moulded
into parrots
and taught to draw rainbows
from textbooks;

where college seats
go to the highest bidder

and

where medical degrees
and fancy diplomas
have a price;

oh Maa,
what wisdom shall I ask
of Thee?

Sigh…
nevertheless…

Saraswati Devi,
Vidyang dehi namostute.
